Comedy, Commissioning and Pitching, oh my!
The insider secrets to getting your show made
Last Thursday at Soho Mews House…
I was invited to speak to an intimate room of 15 brilliant creatives about comedy, commissioning, and getting pitch-ready. I almost said no. Too much on, too many deadlines but something told me to go.
Because sometimes, you need to get out of your own head (and your own house!) and into a space where you can connect with people who truly get it—the doubts, the big ideas, the endless slog, and hopefully…the sparks.
The room was full of writers, producers, and aspiring digital creators. Each one carried a mix of passion and frustration I know well. The industry can make you feel invisible, especially when you’re trying to break in without connections. But moments like this remind me: connection changes everything.
When you hear directly from someone who’s commissioned and greenlit shows, years of guesswork vanish. I’ve seen thousands of pitches so I know what works, what flops, and why. And when that knowledge meets a
community of like-minded creatives, the results multiply.
One person told me it was unusual for someone with my experience to share so openly. Honestly? I can’t imagine doing it any other way.
Falling Action (The Takeaways)
Here’s what this gathering reinforced for me:
Seek the experts – they’ll save you from reinventing the wheel (or worse, pitching the same broken one). My consultancy can help with that.
Find your people – a creative community makes the journey lighter and sharper.
Ask for feedback – it’s not a weakness; it’s the fastest route to getting better.
When you’re surrounded by people on the same journey, sharing, learning, and getting real industry insights, you stop spinning your wheels alone. You start making moves that matter.
And that’s exactly why I’ll keep saying yes to rooms like this.
